Welcome to our first installation of Waterfall Wednesday and Hump Day Huts. One has nothing to do with the other it is just for those who are daydreaming and trying to get through the remainder of the work week. We will be featuring some of our favorite waterfalls and huts from around the place and hope it will encourage all our readers and followers to get out there and explore their backyard next weekend. So enjoy.
First up our waterfall Wednesday comes to you from the beautiful and tranquil Wilson River in the rainforest clad hinterland of the Mid North Coast of NSW. Deep within Willi Willi National Park the 7.2km return walk from the Wilson River Picnic Area along Wilsin River Road will lead you past huge ancient strangler figs and deep pristine rainforest to the base of these impressive falls. Just be aware it can be a leech haven down here so wear protective clothing and be prepared to pull some these suckers off when you reach the falls, but it is well worth it, believe us.
For our Hump Day Hut we head south into Kosciuszko National Park and the Jagungal wilderness in central Kosciuszko. About 15km north west of Tooma Reservoir you will find a Trackhead carpark where a 4km return walk departs from to this beautiful historic mountain hut. Be aware the last 400 metres to the hut is a steep decline to the valley but again well worth the effort. Initially built in the 1930s the original Round Mountain Hut sadly burnt down in the 1940s with the current hut being rebuilt soon after and initially being used by graziers prior to being taken over by National Parks. Today it is used as an emergency shelter for bushwalkers in summer and cross country skiers during the winter. Camping is permitted nearby to the hut and views across the wilderness to Mount Jagungal are outstanding.
