Welcome to “Nature Escapes Central Tablelands of New South Wales”. We have had a great time researching this fascinating area, finding some new spots and revisiting some old favourites, all in our own backyard. From exploring long forgotten ghost towns to camping beside bubbling rivers, viewing spectacular pagoda rock formations or fishing for trout in one of the many estuaries and highland lakes the Central Tablelands has much to offer the modern day explorer, and all within a few short hours from Sydney.
We have developed this guide for people who, like ourselves love getting out of the towns and exploring the rich cultural diversity, scenic natural highlights and delving into the fascinating history. To complete your exploration why not do as our forefathers have done and spend a night or two under the stars with a myriad of camping options to choose from.
The Central Tablelands starts just west of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales and is only a short few hours drive from the city making it an ideal weekend getaway for those who wish to escape the crowds of the coast. From historic gold mining towns and abandoned industrial sites hidden deep within mountain ranges to trout filled rivers and streams this region has much to offer. This guide is centred around the major towns of Lithgow, Bathurst and Mudgee where you will find most facilities to stock up on supplies.
Whether you wish to soak up the fascinating history, bush walk through mountain ranges, canoe along quiet rivers or highland dams, go fishing for trout, take in the vistas from atop mountain peaks, have enjoyable car and 4wd touring or find that secluded bush camping spot the Central Tablelands will certainly deliver.
